Peanut Butter Salmonella Cases Rise to 45 in New York

In a report issued today, New York State Health Department officials confirmed that 45 persons to date have become infected with an outbreak strain of  Salmonella Typhimurium linked to the consumption of contaminated peanut butter and peanut products manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America and Kellogg Company.  The majority of the illnesses are related to the consumption of Austin and Keebler peanut butter crackers.  Previous reports pegged the number of illnesses at 34. 

The United States Center for Disease Control has confirmed over 714 cases nationally as a result of this outbreak.

The illness onset dates for the New York cases range from October 2, 2008 through May 20, 2009.  The illnesses arose in the following counties:  Wyoming (1), St. Lawrence (2), Nassau (2), Onondaga (9), Suffolk (4), Oneida (1), Steuben (2), Monroe (3), Tioga (1), Catterauga (2), Broome (1), Fulton (1), Madison (1), Ontario (1), Erie (5), Niagara (2), Rensselauer (2), Washington (1), Delaware (1), Rockland (1), Cayuga (1), and Warren (1).
