The recent Salmonella Rissen outbreak due to recalled Uncle Chen’s and Lian How spices that sickened over 60 people in Washington, California, Oregon, and Nevada has caused several of our clients to ask: “How rare is Salmonella Rissen?
To fully answer that question, some background is needed.
Every year, over 40,000 people culture positive for one of over 2500 serotypes of salmonella. About 50% of those people test positive for one of three serotypes: Typhimurium, Enteriditis, and Newport. The other 50 percent test positive for one of the remaining 2500+ serotypes.
According to the CDC’s annual salmonella report, during the 11 years from 1996 through 2006, a total of 85 people tested positive for Salmonella Rissen. That is an average of 7 per year. In other words - it is a EXTREMELY rare serotype of salmonella.
In the current outbreak related to the recalled spices, over 60 people tested positive for Salmonella Rissen in just over 2 months! Statistically speaking, that is over 50 times the expected rate - and obviously related to an outbreak.
Simon & Luke already represents several of the victims of the current Salmonella Rissen outbreak. We filed the first spice lawsuit in the United States last week.
