Salmonella Rissen Outbreak Expands to 5 States – 79 Illnesses Reported

Health officials have confirmed that the recent West Coast outbreak of rare Salmonella Rissen has now expanded to 5 states.  The current illness count has also risen to 79, and is distributed as follows:  California (63), Nevada (10), Oregon (4), Washington (1), and Idaho (1).   Illness onsets range from December 9, 2008 to April 29, 2009. Simon & Luke has settled a case on behalf of a woman who contracted botulism.  After consuming Castleberry’s Black Rock Chili with Beans in late June of 2007, she began experiencing paralysis, dizziness, blurred vision, muscle weakness, respiratory problems, numbness, tingling, difficulty swallowing, and dry mouth.  Her symptoms persisted for several months and she received medical treatment for her condition. CDC Links Salmonella Saintpaul Outbreak to Alfalfa Sprouts

The CDC today issued a report on their investigation of the recent Salmonella Saintpaul outbreak.   The investigation has now identified 228 cases in 13 states and linked the source of the outbreak to alfalfa sprouts produced at multiple facilities using seeds that likely originated from a common grower.
