Federal officials confirmed Monday they have found salmonella in a central California processing plant that sparked a nationwide 2,000,000 pound pistachio recall. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said state and federal inspectors discovered the bacteria in “critical areas” at Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., the second-largest pistachio processor in the United States.
FDA officials also said they found locations within Setton’s facility where raw and roasted nuts could have become cross-contaminated with salmonella.
The company expanded its recall today to include all raw and roasted pistachios from its entire 2008 crop.
Federal regulators warned consumers to avoid eating pistachios or foods containing them. The FDA also advised wholesalers, retailers, and operators of restaurants and food service establishments against selling or serving any pistachios or pistachio products until they can figure out whether they came from Setton’s tainted facility.
